During a home fire, there are about a million troubles and worries that a homeowner face. Knowing how troublesome home emergencies are was the inspiration for SERVPRO of Amherst / Clarence to become a thing. SERVPRO of Amherst / Clarence partners with homeowners (and business owners too) to make fire damages "Like it never even happened®"  But how do they take care of the aftermath of fire damages, like smoke damages?

Smoke damages are one branch of the different types of fire damages, but it is important to understand the behavior of smoke. Smoke rises to the upper levels of structures, so during the fire damage mitigation process, the SERVPRO of Amherst / Clarence will examine upper levels of a structure to inspect the insulation. Insulation can trap smoke and allow the smell to linger, long past the fire. SERVPRO of Amherst / Clarence’s team will remove the odorous insulation and then use special chemicals and cleaning techniques to remove the smell from a home. They partner with their clients through the whole process to alleviate all of their clients worries.

A photo showing smoke and the words saying "Smoke Damage?" Always practice fire safety in your household.

Fire departments across the United States respond to an average of 358,500 home fires every year! These fires caused billions in damage and resulted in several thousand civilian injuries. To avoid being part of a disaster like that, take the time to reduce your risk of a home fire. Check your smoke alarms and make sure that they have the proper battery life. You can easily test your smoke alarms by pressing the button on the surface. If it beeps weakly or not at all, it’s time to immediately change the batteries. Keep household items clear of your heating sources. Avoid having curtains or blankets directly touching these sources. Always keep an eye on any lit candles. If you are going to a different part of the house, blow out the candle. Watch what you are cooking in the kitchen! It’s possible for old food particles in the stove to set on fire or even the food you are cooking. Lastly, keep a fire extinguisher handy in case of the worst. However, if the worst does occur SERVPRO will speedily clean your home to leave it good as new.

Why Sump Pumps Fail. SERVPRO of Amherst / Clarence Can Help if it Does

3/20/2021 (Permalink)

A photo showing a sump pump pit A malfunctioning sump pump can flood a basement with water quickly, leaving a messy, muddy clean-up.

Why and what happens if your sump pump fails in your home or business?

Here are the five most common reasons why sump pumps fail:

 A loss of power.

Lack of power is one of the most frequent causes of sump pump failures. If your sump pump runs on electricity, you will be in trouble if you lose power during a major storm or if you do not pay your electric bill.

Heavy rain or fast snow melt can cause an overworked sump pump.

When you have excessive amounts of rain or water flow, there is a possibility your sump pump could continuously run until it burns out. Once it burns out, your basement will fill with water.

A Clogged Sump Pump

The drain lines that feed into the pit of your sump pump often carry bits of dirt, sand and debris that can build up over time and clog the pump. The sump pump will turn on, but it will not function properly and could lead to flooding.

Age of Sump Pump

Sump Pumps last 6 to 12 years.

If you know your pump is getting older or are unsure of its age, it is a good idea to replace it.

If your basements floods, you will need to get a plumber out to replace the sump pump and SERVPRO to mitigate the water damage.

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

A photo explains the 3 categories of water with examples of a tub, waterbed and toilet overflow. No matter what category of water, be sure to call SERVPRO of Amherst/Clarence.

According to the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certificate), there are three basic categories of water damage which are based on the level of contamination:

Category 1 Water – Classified as “clean water”. It refers to a source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans.   Those would include overflow of tub and sinks broken water supply lines, tub, water supply lines such as the toilet, washing machine or ice maker line.

Category 2 Water – Known as “grey water”.  Cat 2 water contains a significant level of chemical, biological, or physical contaminants and causes sickness when consumed or even exposed to. Cat 2 carries microorganisms. Examples are toilet bowls with urine (no feces) that overflows, sump pump failures, seepage, and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.

Category 3 Water – The dreaded "black water" and is grossly contaminated. This water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria, and fungi, causing severe sickness. Black water sources will affect the indoor environment. How to Protect Your Home from Storms

Here are some items you will want to put on your to-do list for the next year:

Ensure your roof is in good shape. Check your roof for problems like missing shingles and signs of leaks. Repair them to keep your home safer.

Keep an eye out for tree limbs that hang over your home. Limbs and branches overhanging your family can come down when the winds get high and heavy. Cut down any stems hanging over your roof or garage.

Be sure your gutters are clear. This step is vital every season. Sometimes, it is the most important thing you can do for your home. Clean gutters are vital to keeping water around your home flowing the right way, instead of causing water damage.

Be sure anything that is around your home is secure, too. Do not let unsecured furniture or other similar items become tools for wind damage. Trim back trees that need it and secure everything you can.

If a fire, flood, or any other cause damage to your home, you can always count on us for restoration assistance. We are available 247 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services and how we can help you.

Space heaters, electrical fires, fireplaces, and kerosene heaters are some of the causes of fires SERVPRO of Amherst/Clarence has provided emergency mitigation services and cleaning. There are more fires during the cold months over any other season. Space heaters are behind 79 percent of deadly home heating fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Most of those fires start because an object sitting to closet to the heater got too hot and caught fire, but even plugging the equipment into the wrong outlet could put you in danger.

  • Make sure the space heater has the seal of a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories).
  • Make sure the heater is equipped with a tip-over safety switch, which automatically shuts off the heater if the unit gets falls over.
  • Select a heater properly sized for the room.
  • Install smoke alarms for every floor of your home, outside all sleeping areas and inside each bedroom. Test them once a month and change batteries every 6 months or sooner.
  • Have carbon monoxide detectors set up on every level. High levels of carbon monoxide can cause headaches, sickness, and death.

Candle Fire Safety

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

Photo shows the orange SERVPRO logo with flames around it next to a candle. Candle Safety 101

Every month there is a headline in the news about a candle fire.  Candles cause 3% of reported house fires and many go unreported as they are extinguished by the homeowner. That is 15,600 fires a year put out by the fire department. Most candle fires start in bedrooms and left unattended and too close to combustible materials.  Candles that are left burning for over 4 hours are more likely to cause the glass to heat up causing it to reach a flashpoint and explode.  That is scary.  Besides the risk of fire, candles burn causing soot to go throughout your home causing gray to black staining on walls and ceilings.  These simple steps can help prevent a fire in your home:

  1. Do not walk away.  Never leave the candle unattended
  2. Give your candle space. Remove obstacles and clutter surrounding your candle.
  3. Keep away from pets and children.
  4. Avoid placing candles near windows and vents.
  5. Keep candles apart.
  6. Do not burn for long periods at a time.

Should you experience a candle fire or residual soot, please call SERVPRO of Amherst/Clarence.  We can assist.

Avoid keeping fabric, like blankets or curtains too close to portable heaters. Also be sure to never use an electrical heater that has frayed or broken wires. In a similar situation, electrical wiring can cause fires. Older faulty wiring is susceptible to overloading or short circuiting. It’s a good idea to get your wiring checked out by a professional electrician, especially if you own an older home. Candles are often the cause of many home fires. You should never leave a candle unattended or place a candle near cloth or fabric that can easily light on fire. The lighters and matches that are used to light candles can be just as dangerous so keep them out of reach of children or in a locked area. If you follow these tips, you will make your home safer from a potential fire. However, if the worst does occur, SERVPRO is here to help you recover and provide the necessary services to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Storm watch in WNY

7/6/2020 (Permalink)

a sun shining in the blue sky Please be safe and remember to stay hydrated in this extreme heat.

With these scorching high temperatures we can expect some severe rain and possible winds over the next week. Please remember to keep cool and hydrated. Please keep an eye on your animals, dogs especially have difficulty cooling down. If you start to notice your dogs panting or drooling, these are signs of heat stoke. Please make sure to keep your pets inside where it is cooler and shadier. If you take them out try to do so early in the morning or when the sun is going down. Children also get hotter 3 to 4 times quicker then adults so a rule of thumb to follow when dressing babies for the hot weather is: also put one less layer of clothing on them as you do yourself. There is nothing wrong with a diaper and nothing else when it comes to the scorching heat. Keep your baby cool and hydrated so to keep their core temperature down and avoid heat stroke and other serious conditions.

Flooding tips for your basement

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

sump pump in the floor of a cement basement Having a sump pump properly maintained can save you a big expense in the long run.

Sometimes in bad weather conditions it can cause your basement to flood. If this happens here are some probable causes for the flooding.

  • Surface inflow, or overland flooding. During periods of heavy rain or stormy weather, surface water may gather up  around the house, or accumulate on hard surfaces such as driveways or roads adjacent to a home. During extreme weather conditions, this water can flow into your home.  Being in Close proximity to a natural stream or road-side ditch can also present a risk. Proper grading on your property will reduce the risk of surface water getting into your home.
  • Foundation drainage issuesHomes usually have some form of a drainage system built around them. This helps promote the movement of water away from the basement and helps keep your foundation from leaking. However if there are cracked in your foundation it can cause major leaking and basement issues such as mold.
  • If your basement is equipped with a sump pump it can mean that the foundation drainage system of your home requires some assistance to keep up with the groundwater around it. Sump pumps, when working properly and properly maintained, can safely pump excess water above the foundation and away from your home. Ideally, this water should be routed to the lawn or storm sewer. If the pumps cannot keep up, or fails to operate (perhaps due to a power failure, or malfunction), the groundwater level around the foundation can rise to the point that it fills up and pours out onto the basement floor.

Grill safety tips.

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

grill in the backyard with food cooking on it Outdoor grills can be very dangerous. Please maintain grill safety at all times this summer.

The summer is finally here and with the world facing a pandemic, more and more people are staying home. That means more cookouts and backyard get-togethers. Here are some helpful safety tips when grilling outside.

First always keep your gas grill away from anything flammable. Propane tanks can leak risking fire . one way to check for leaks is to make a solution of half water and half dish soap. pout over nozzle and if it starts to bubble you may have a possible leak.

Second, always keep your grill clean. A dirty grill risks grease fires, as well as risk of burning yourself on old food stuck to the grill.

Third, keep grille at least 10 feet away from all structures, including houses gazebos, swings, chairs tables, etc. these are just a couple things to keep in mind while grilling outside. If for any reason you do experience any issue that result in fire damage, please give us a call. We can make it "Like it never even happened."

How to deal with a Grease Fire

3/4/2020 (Permalink)

A grease fire in a kitchen pan Do not attempt to lift a pan or pot on fire!

Over 160,000 home fires are caused by cooking every year! Cooking remains the number one reason for home fires and home fire injuries. These raging fires are often ignited by grease and then we are unaware how to deal with them. Here are some tips to dealing with grease fires:

  1. Cover the flame with a lid to cool the fire and prevent its spread
  2. Turn off the heat source
  3. A small fire can be smothered by baking soda or salt
  4. Use a fire extinguisher to put out the flame

Do not use water to extinguish the fire. This will only make the fire worse. Do not attempt to move the pot and pan. It’s likely that the pan can fall and the grease will splatter spreading the fire instantly.

If you fail to put out the fire. Leave immediately, closing the door behind you, and call 911.

In the event of fire damage, SERVPRO has trained professionals who can help you cleanup and get your home back to its original condition.

Close before you Doze

2/26/2020 (Permalink)

A hand closing a door Sleeping with the door closed is your greatest tool to prevent fire spread

Keep the door closed! This has become the motto of many fire prevention associations when asked about whether you should keep your door open or closed when you sleep. Keeping the door closed when you sleep has many benefits. It will reduce fire growth and spread, limit damage to your home, and save lives! Those should be reason enough to keep the door closed. Fires spread far faster throughout the home than they did forty years ago. Due to modern synthetic materials and furniture, fire is up to 7x faster. While you had up to 17 minutes to escape a fire 40 years ago, you only have 3 minutes today! Closed doors will slow fire growth. When leaving a room that’s on fire, close the door! In the event of a fire disaster, SERVPRO will help you with our team of trained technicians and specialized equipment. We will work fast and thoroughly to restore your home to pre-fire conditions.

2/11/2020 (Permalink)

Storm season is here With this weird warm up a storm could be possible, so be prepared. If issues arise call SERVPRO to help.

Its very unusual to have such high temperatures and low snowfall iches so far into the winter season. Dose this irregular weather mean a cold front is ahead of us? According to our wonderful groundhog, no shadow was seen this year giving us hope that winter will not last long this year. Temperatures in the 40's is definitely a good sign, however this is the greater Buffalo area and we can never get that luck. The probability of a storm coming to town is very high considering a=our location so close to the riverfront and lake effect. This year be prepared for any weather. Make sure roofs are cleared of snow as well as can be to avoid ice dams with this up and down temperature. Make sure heaters are turned off when not at home to avoid any house fires, keep water dripping lightly to avoid freezing pipes. However if you should have any issues this season, give SERVPRO a call for any storm related needs.

Here in Amherst we know the winters can be brutal, and trying to heat your home because more and more costly and requires much unwanted effort. here are some safety tips to avoid costly fire damage due to inappropriate use of space heaters.

According to the NFPA space heaters caused 85% of house fires between 2011-2017. this is an astonishing amount and can be easily avoided if taken the right precautions. Always keep about 3 feet of space between space heaters and any children or pet areas. Kids and pets can accidentally get burned, knock over the heater causing major issues.

Always use the designated kind of fuel for the space heater you are using. Using the wrong fuel could result in malfunction or improper heating.

-Keep candles away from windows and drapery

-Keep away from flammable items

-Place the candle on a heat resistant surface

-Keep candles away from children and pets

Thanksgiving Fire Prevention Tips

11/26/2019 (Permalink)

Soot on the kitchen cabinets as a result of a oven fire Soot covered the entire home requiring the assistance of SERVPRO of Amherst Clarence.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, we are all preparing our menus, getting our grocery list ready, putting our guest list in place and deciding on how we are going to cook our turkey. Oven Bake? Deep Fry? Smoke? They all sound delicious and all have fire risks. Deep frying a turkey is the most dangerous. In the US, fire fighters respond to 1,000 fires a year that involve deep fryers and sadly cause extensive 3rd degree burns to the cook.

Some common mistakes when using a deep frying are:

-Placed to closely to a structure/home

-Placing to much oil in the fryer

-Attempting to fry a turkey that isn’t completely thawed.

-Always follow the instructions of the deep fryer -Don’t be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while deep frying -Always have a fire extinguisher near by -Heat the oil slowly -If a grease fire occurs do not use water to put it out.

Prevent Oven Fires By Following These Tips:

-Make sure your oven is clean before using -Pick up the dropped food, wipe up the spills -Put a cover over food that might splatter -Never cook unattended -Don’t cook if you are sleepy or consumed alcoholic beverages -Check the food often -Keep the space around the oven clear of items that could catch on fire -Use kitchen timers -Don’t store items on top of the stove or inside the oven.

-Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it

Thanksgiving is the highest day for cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day.

Practice these tips and have a safe happy holiday from your friends at SERVPRO of Amherst Clarence

When a Storm Hits!

6/15/2019 (Permalink)

Polar vortexes, or polar cyclones as they are sometimes called, are climatological features that hover near the poles year-round. These cold-core low-pressure areas strengthen in the winter and weaken in the summer.  Strengthening storm systems within the troposphere (the lowest portion of the Earth’s atmosphere) can act to intensify the polar vortex by significantly cooling the poles. A portion of the polar vortex can be fragmented and plunge over Canada, the Midwestern, Central, Southern and Northeastern United States.  This alteration in the polar vortex can occur due to the displacement of the polar jet stream.

An example of this alteration would be the significant northwestern push of the polar jet stream over the Western part of the United States this past winter. This is different than the El Nino and La Nina weather occurrences, which are based on the water temperatures and air pressure in the Pacific Ocean that we have seen in the past. So, will the polar vortex have an effect?

Get your sweaters out, stock up on hot cocoa and prepare your home.  Have the chimney inspected, check to see that your pipes are insulated, remember to turn your faucets to a slow, constant drip if the temperatures will be below 20, disconnect the garden hoses, check all of the weather stripping around your windows and doors, and replace your HVAC filters. All of these things will help keep you and your home safe and minimize any possible damages that could be caused by the sudden drops in temperature.

Fire Damage : Process of Restoration

6/14/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damage

Fire Damage in Buffalo NY Smoke Damage in Buffalo, NY and Restoration, and the Process of Fire Restoration.

The process of fire restoration can be very involved. Private homeowners and companies can oftentimes be devastated by the damage caused by this kind of event. One aspect that gives peace of mind involves knowing when the right professional has been hired. That is one of the reasons why it is important to hire a firm that is associated with the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification.

Homeowners and business owners may be in shock from the initial devastation. It is important to try and follow the proper steps to achieve a complete fire restoration. Service providers that are associated with the Institute will have the following distinctions: current training, safety and health certifications, vast amounts of experience in restoration projects and the proper licenses and insurance information. Customers should also check all references and obtain price quotes prior to hiring anyone. Any contracts that are presented should be reviewed closely.

The first step in the process is to clean up as much of the existing area as possible. If the area is not immediately cleaned, soot residue and permanent damage can be left behind. If the homeowner or business owner does the initial cleaning, it is important to follow these steps. When cleaning, always use dust masks and open the area for proper ventilation. Clean from the ceilings to the floors and vacuum all floors and upholstery. Wash any items that are able to be laundered. Clean the outside with a pressure washer if available.

If immediate clean up is not done, it can lead to devastating effects. Within minutes of fire and smoke damage, appliances and many items will discolor to a yellow hue. After a few hours, acid will stain bathrooms and many other areas of the home or business. Within days, walls will discolor permanently and items will begin to rust due to the acid residue.  Finally, after weeks the cost of clean-up will become substantially more expensive. The building and furnishings can be permanently damaged by the acid left behind. Soot residue will be layered throughout the home or business. For these reasons, it is vital to contact a professional associated with the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification to utilize fire restoration techniques in an effort to return the home or business to a preloss state. One company or service provider should be able to handle the damage. The seal of Certification by the Institute should be shown on any provider’s website. This shows the customer the reliability and the expertise of the service provider.

Residue and smoky odors need to be removed immediately. Professionals will use the process of fire restoration to achieve satisfactory results. These providers will remove the source of the odor, clean any items that can be salvaged, get rid of any lingering odor with an odor counteracting and deodorizing fog. Finally, the provider will seal salvageable items to encapsulate odor and prevent further recontamination.

Homeowners and businesses that are educated in the fire restoration process are able to minimize the cost of repair. Professionals can be contacted in a timely manner to return the area to a preloss state.  By hiring the right professionals the victims can have some peace of mind during a very stressful time.

We are here to help with your clean-up and restoration process!

Spring Weather Tips

6/14/2019 (Permalink)

While spring brings the promise of warm weather and longer days, it also brings a variety of conditions that can include heavy rains and severe weather, which can increase your flood risk. Take action to protect yourself, your family, and your business—before a weather event occurs and it’s too late.

April marks the start of the rainy season. Spring storms can bring several inches of rain in only a matter of hours or there can be consistent rainfall for days. These heavy rains can lead to severe flooding by over-saturating the ground, overfilling storm drains, or rivers spilling over their banks.

As one of the most common hazards in the United States, it’s important we prepare for the potential disaster that flooding can cause. Even if you feel you live in a community with a low risk of flooding, remember that anywhere it rains, it can flood. Just because you haven’t experienced a flood in the past, doesn’t mean you won’t in the future.

In order help prepare you for the possibility of a flood, we offer you these tips:

  • Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan
  • Avoid building in a floodplain unless you elevate and reinforce your home
  • Elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel in your home if you live in an area that has a high flood risk
  • Install check-valves to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home
  • Seal basement walls and floor with waterproofing compounds to prevent seepage through cracks
  • Always keep your gutters and downspouts clean to allow water to flow freely
  • Prepare a flood evacuation plan
  • Know how to safely shut-off utilities
  • Keep insurance and vital records in a water-proof box
  • Have a portable radio to listen for important current information

Imagine, you come home from work, running errands or even from vacation, only to find your basement is flooded! Your initial response may be to try and fix the issue yourself, but before you do, check our “Three types of contaminated water” article. If you have grey or black water, it is highly recommended you contact a professional ASAP, and remember, clean water can turn into grey water in less then 24 hours.

So, do you call your general contractor or a disaster restoration company? There are a few important differences between contractors and professional Water Restoration Companies. As a professional Restoration Company, we try to restore, rather than replace, whenever possible.

Most contractors are not certified in drying and cleaning water damage to industry standards, so they tend to replace everything that is affected. This will often will include all flooring, walls, cabinets and even furniture. SERVPRO technicians are certified in drying and cleaning water damage to industry standards. We will not remove materials unless it is necessary. The average time to dry is 3 days, this prevents further interruption to your daily life and saves you money. Springtime is here, but it is also a time for unpredictable weather— meaning you should always be prepared for the chance of severe thunderstorms that lead to the perfect conditions for a tornado touchdown.

The highest occurrences of tornadoes, traditionally, occur in April and May, which means we are currently in the height of tornado season throughout the United States.

Included in this blog are some tips and information on tornadoes that can help keep your family prepared for the worst possible scenario.

<h4tornadoes-form">How Tornadoes Form

There are, roughly, 1,200 tornadoes occurrences in the U.S. each year, and they are spawned by thunderstorms, especially those known as “supercells.”

When a tornado forms there is an event where the wind speed has changed, creating a horizontal spinning effect within a storm cell. This is then tipped vertical by rising air moving up through the thunderclouds.

The tornado’s signature funnel cloud is transparent and not visible at first, but it becomes more visible when water droplets from the storm’s moist air condense or when dust and debris are picked up. Typically, a tornado can grow to be 660 feet wide and will move at 10 to 20 miles per hour, although larger and faster have been observed. Hail and intense winds of over 200 mph can accompany tornadoes.

Tornadoes generally occur during the spring and summertime, during the late afternoon, but remember that they can occur anytime and anywhere.

<h4to-do-in-a-tornado-warning">What to Do in a Tornado Warning

Understanding the difference between a tornado watch and tornado warning is your first step of defense. A watch will be issued when the conditions are favorable for tornadoes, while a warning is issued when a tornado has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar.

Take action in finding a shelter immediately if a warning has been issued for your area, especially if you are in the tornado’s path.

Shelter options include:

  • Underground options like a basement or storm shelter.
  • The lowest part of your home, in an area that is away from outside walls, doors and windows. Interior closets and bathrooms can be ideal options.
  • If you are outside, try to get to a sturdy building. Mobile homes and trailers are not a safe option.
  • If on the road and no building access is available, do not get under an overpass or bridge. Instead, find a low, flat location and use your arms to protect your head and neck.

You should make sure your home shelter is equipped with flashlights, a battery-powered weather radio and extra batteries.

If you are out on the road during a tornado, NEVER try to outrun a tornado. Also, when you are taking shelter in your home, you can provide additional cover by using furniture items like couch cushions, mattresses or blankets to help keep your head and neck covered.

Tornadoes can be devastating for the areas where they touch down. While meteorologists and weather services can provide some advanced warning about potential threats, tornadoes can still occur with little to no warning at all.

If your home or business has been damaged by a tornado, know that SERVPRO® of Amherst-Clarence is ready and waiting to jump into action and get cleanup and restoration of your property underway.

Commercial Water Damage

Commercial Water Damage In Buffalo, NY

Commercial water damage surprises business owners every time it happens. Everyone knows that the sprinkler system is there to stop fire damage, but no one understands the damage that happens when it engages. Fortunately, SERVPRO has the experience, training, and equipment to restore an office or a kitchen back to their original state.

Sprinklers soak everything, that is what they are supposed to do to prevent the spread of fire. Paper documents, cardboard storage boxes, and books quickly turn to a mush and must be thrown out. If the final condition is not an issue and the business owner needs to keep original contracts, we can preserve the legibility of our technicians can get them spread out on a dry surface. We use air movers to blow warm, dry air over the paper gently and while we cannot return the items to their original condition or look, we can preserve the image in many cases.

The item that usually catches the most damage next is the carpet. SERVPRO technicians use extraction wands to draw out water without damaging the nape of the carpet. If there is a carpet pad, we remove and dispose of it. Pads quickly deteriorate when they become wet, and they are cheaper to replace rather than attempt to restore. Once we remove the water, crew members use the air movers again to force warm, dry air across the surface to dry it out while preventing mold.

SERVPRO can make your life easier and get you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Every home should have a fire escape plan. According to the American Red Cross, homeowners shouldn’t just have a plan of escape for a fire but have a plan and practice it twice a year. Home fires cannot be predicted and can happen to anyone. If you’re making preparations to prevent home fire, you should also prepare for what you and your family would do if you have one. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross in making a plan for your home.

  • All members of the household should know two ways to get out of every room.
  • Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas or homes on the second floor or above. Learn how to use them and store them near the window.
  • Pick a place outside for everyone to meet and make sure everyone knows where it is.
  • Practice your home fire drill until everyone in the household can do it in less than two minutes.
  • Practice waking up to smoke alarms, low crawling and meeting outside. Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1.
  • Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes should catch on fire.

Flooding In Your Bathroom

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Bathroom flooding can be very destructive and damaging to your home. Flooding can lead to potential health and safety risks if not handled properly. Bathroom flooding is especially problematic because it can happen at any time of the day or night. You should know several things about bathroom flooding situations.

Causes of Bathroom Flooding
Bathroom flooding can be caused by several things. Clogs are very common. Clogs deep in your plumbing can force water back up and out of your sink, tub or toilet. Drain problems can result in flooding. This includes a jammed drain or a drain that is filled with hair or toilet paper. The drain will stop the water from reaching the pipes. A pipe connected to a fixture could actually burst because of corrosion, age or water pressure problems. A final cause could be frozen pipes that block the drains.

How Bathroom Flooding Can Harm Your Home
Bathroom flooding can do a large amount of damage to your home and possibly your health. The water can start to rot away the beams that make up the structure of the floor, walls and ceiling beneath. Severe flooding can reach your basement and damage the foundation or appliances like water heaters. Flooding can actually start to corrode other pipes in the bathroom. The water can cause toxic mold to start growing. You might catch a disease or infection if you come into contact with wastewater. Even sewer gases that come up can lead to respiratory problems and eye or nose irritation.

Bathroom flooding can be very destructive and damaging to your home.

How to React When Bathroom Flood Starts
You need to act fast when bathroom flooding starts. Attempt to shut off the water from a safe location. Avoid touching or standing in wastewater from toilets or backed up drains. Attempt to contain the flooding if possible so that less of your home is damaged. Do not flush toilets. If you have towels and mops, then try to minimize the amount of standing water on the ground. You must also contact a professional water damage restoration company immediately to deal with the problem.

The Importance of Contacting Professionals
You always want to contact restoration professionals when you have a bathroom flooding situation. Professionals will know how to prevent mold growth and how to remove all the water from your bathroom safely. They will attempt to salvage as much as possible. You want to rely on a restoration company to repair water-damaged areas for maximum safety. You should always call a restoration company when you encounter flooding in your bathroom.

Preventing Bathroom Flooding
You can prevent some bathroom flooding situations by watching what goes into the drains. Do not put large amounts of toilet paper, food or other objects in toilets and sinks. Keep solid items out of drains. Have your pipes and plumbing inspected regularly to avoid corrosion and burst pipes. Have your sewer lines and drains professionally cleaned once every one to two years. Call plumbers as soon as you see slow drains or frequent clogs. Just a few simple actions can prevent many bathroom flooding situations.

How To Undertake The Residential Water Damage Restoration

Since the prospect of water damage in a building can be extremely stressful, it is vital to have as much information as possible. A faulty plumbing system can cause leakages that might result in extensive damages. The following tips will enable you to deal with such a problem in a better way:

Address the problem immediately

Remember that as the water seeps into the wooden furniture and floors, it can lead to huge losses. Before you contact your insurance company, it's important to turn off the water to stop the leak. An emergency plumber can repair the leak. Once the leak has stopped it is important to remove the water as fast as possible. SERVPRO of Amherst/Clarence has the necessary extraction equipment to remove most of the excess water. We also have the drying equipment that will remove the rest of water from wet surfaces. Water damage can be extremely costly to repair, but if you tackle the problem quickly, you can prevent the loss from becoming more costly.

Mold Growth Prevention

Water cleanup is the best way to reduce the impact of the mold growth in business floors and furniture. The sure way to prevent mold growth is to dry the building completely. By eliminating the water, you will keep the mold spores from having the moisture they need to grow. Acting promptly after a water loss is the best way to prevent mold growth. In addition, failure to remove the water in home floors and other wooden surfaces can lead to significant destruction and possible mold growth.

Contact your insurance company

If you do not have a policy for water damage, you might have to handle the repair costs alone. Insuring your home against water damage will help you to cut the cost of restoration significantly. While the insurance company will help you with the restoration, you must also take the mitigation seriously. If your home insurance policy does not cover the cost of flood damage, you will struggle to undertake the restoration and repair jobs.

Water cleanup and drying

Water cleanup in the quest to avert the flood damage can save you a huge amount of money. If you experience the damage of water in home or office surfaces, ensure that you engage a specialist to tackle the problem. The pollution levels of the water in home storage tanks will also have an impact on the damage. If the water in business reservoirs and tanks has some impurities, they can affect the wooden surfaces in a negative way.

Whenever you want to mitigate the negative effects flood damage, water cleanup is the priority. Whether you are experiencing the leakages of water in business premises or at home, you require the help of a competent contractor. The contractor will remove the damaged elements and salvage some materials to save money. Drying the wet wood can help to reduce the overall cost of restoration compared to undertaking an overhaul.

Flood Damage mitigation

The best way to protect you home from such problems is to come up with the right mitigation measures. While you may not have the special drying equipment, you can avoid the problems by repairing your plumbing system. Replacing a faulty faucet is one of the best mitigation measures if you are looking to save on home restoration significantly. Reduce the damage by water in business furniture by taking the right measures to mitigate the problem.

Avoiding the future leakages

Stopping a leakage before it occurs is your best defense against the problem. A competent contractor will take the necessary precautions while repairing your home to prevent such damage in the future. Applying varnish and sealants in the wooden surfaces can help to reduce the seepage. Some of the most prevalent causes of water damage are:

• Leaking roofs
• Burst pipes
• Flawed door and window installations
• Leaking and broken water lines
• Leaking toilets
• Leaking faucets
• Faulty water reservoirs

Cold temperatures can cause pipes to freeze. Frozen pipes can result in costly repairs to you as a home or business owner. The good news is there are ways to prevent pipes from freezing. Here are some tips for this winter.

Frozen Pipes Can Burst

Frozen pipes are a problem by themselves, because they prevent water flow, but even worse, frozen pipes can eventually burst, causing damage and potential flooding. There are ways to protect your pipes from freezing. These include:

Keep your house warm

If you are leaving for a period of time, make sure that the heat is kept on at your property. You should inform them that the heat can help prevent pipes from freezing, and if pipes freeze and burst, it can cause a lot of water damage to the property and to their possessions. The heat doesn’t have to be kept as high as you normally would keep it if you were home but keeping it set above 50 degrees Fahrenheit at all times is a good idea. This should provide enough heat to keep the pipes warm and to prevent any water inside from freezing.

Open Faucets

When temps hit the freezing level it is a good idea to allow faucets to drip. Allowing the faucet to be open like this will relieve pressure in the pipe. If a pipe freezes, it is actually the pressure that is created between the blockage and the faucet that will cause the pipe to burst. With the faucet open you avoid blockage in the pipes.

Insulation in key

Pipes can be fitted with foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves to help decrease the chances of freezing. This can be an easy solution for pipes that are exposed, but can get expensive if walls, floors or ceilings have to be opened in order to properly insulate the pipe. Additional insulation can also be added to walls and ceilings to keep the pipes warm.

The Differences Between Homeowners Insurance, and Flood Insurance.

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

There basically are two insurance policies that deal with a homeowner's damage due to water -- a flood insurance policy and a homeowners insurance policy. Losses not covered by one of these policies may be covered by the other. Knowing the losses to which your home could be exposed will help you decide whether to buy one or both of these insurance coverage.

While insurance policies may differ in the coverage provided from homeowner to homeowner, there often are basic features common to all policies. You should ask your insurance agent or insurance company about the specifics of your insurance policy.

Flood Insurance

As it currently stands, a standard flood insurance policy, which is written by the National Flood Insurance Program, provides coverage up to the policy limit for damage caused by a flood. The dictionary defines "flood" as a rising and overflowing of a body of water onto normally dry land. For insurance purposes, the word "rising" in this definition is the key to distinguishing flood damage from water damage. Generally, damage caused by water that has been on the ground at some point before damaging your home is considered to be flood damage. A handful of examples of flood damage include:

  • A nearby river overflows its banks and washes into your home.
  • A heavy rain seeps into your basement because the soil can't absorb the water quickly enough
  • A heavy rain or flash flood causes the hill behind your house to collapse into a mud slide that oozes into your home.

Flood damage to your home can be insured only with a flood insurance policy -- no other insurance will cover flood damage. Flood insurance is available through your insurance agent, insurance company or local Federal Emergency Management Office (FEMA). To determine if your home is located in a flood plain, contact your county planning office. If you are living in a flood plain, flood insurance may be an excellent purchase.

Homeowners Insurance

A homeowners insurance policy doesn't provide coverage for flood damage, but it does provide coverage for many types of water damage to your home. Just the opposite from flood damage, for insurance purposes, water damage is considered to occur when water damages your home before the water comes in contact with the ground. A few examples of water damage include:

  • A hailstorm smashes your window, permitting hail and rain free access into your home.
  • A heavy rain soaks through the roof, allowing water to drip through your attic or ceiling.
  • A broken water pipe spews water into your home.

Even if flood or water damage is not covered by your homeowners insurance policy, losses from theft, fire or explosion resulting from water damage is covered. For example, if a nearby creek overflows and floods your home, and looters steal some of your furnishings after you evacuate, the theft would be covered by your homeowners insurance because it is a direct result of the water damage. However, the flood damage would be covered only if you have flood insurance.

It's important to note that flood insurance and homeowners insurance do not duplicate coverage for water damage. Instead, they complement each other.

It is up to you to talk to your insurance agent or insurance company about flood insurance and homeowners insurance, and then decide which insurance coverage you need to protect your home, its contents, and your family.

Black Mold

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Mold growing on a basement ceiling that could have been avoided if properly dried out.

In the 90’s mold became a news headline across the country. The strain of “Black” Mold, Stachybotrys, struck fear in the hearts of thousands of Americans.  Even though that hysteria has passed, it is no joking matter to have mold growing in your home.  It is true that mold spores are everywhere, but for mold to grow you have to have two things: 1) food; 2) dark moist conditions.  There is very little you can do to remove all “food” sources in a house, but you can eliminate the water factor.  When you have a water loss, it is incredibly important to completely dry the area affected so mold will not grow. If you try to take care of it yourself, you run the risk of giving mold a chance to infiltrate your house.  Why would you do that when you can call SERVPRO® of Amherst/Clarence at 716-639-8687 and make sure your house is dry.

Cleaning Importance after Fire Damage

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

A fire in Amherst, NY caused by an space heater

Damage caused by fire is varied. Different surfaces, textures, and materials react in different ways to the extreme temperature which makes restoration a nuanced and complex job. Using the wrong cleaning materials can at best, spread soot and smoke residues. At worst, it can cause further damage and require expensive replacement. After a blaze has been contained, there is the added risk of secondary water damage.

Properties that have fallen victim to fire damage should be pre-tested before any work begins. A pretest can be carried out by a qualified SERVPRO fire technician who can measure affected areas for smoke damage. Although, smoke damage is visible, there are many different types which depend on the materials that burned.

Wet smoke, for example, burns at a low temperature and comes from synthetic materials that could be in appliances, lampshades or fabrics. This smoke, produced from melting plastics, has a pungent smell leaving behind thick, oily markings on walls and ceilings. Dry smoke, on the other hand, comes from natural materials like wood and paper leaving behind a powdery soot like texture.

A SERVPRO technician can conduct a pre-test that looks for different types of smoke residue. A pretest allows us to decide on the correct method of restoration as well as products that we should use to restore your items to pre-fire standards. Using a combination of wet cleaning and dry cleaning allows us to provide a professional focus to each affected area and guarantee the best results.

A fire restoration service by SERVPRO is two-fold. The first is your contents which can be removed, tested and restored. The second is the structure itself, which involves removing soot and smoke residue from your walls, ceilings, and permanent fittings. We can restore your walls, so they are ready for repainting, as well as your floors, windows and, where possible, fabrics.

The final step is to deodorize. Burning materials leave thick smells that are not cleanable with regular fresheners. Our equipment neutralizes the odor particles rather than merely covering the smell. This approach is especially important when tackling synthetics which can release toxins when subjected to fire. WE ARE HERE FOR YOU 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK. CALL SERVPRO of Amherst/Clarence 716-639-8687

Do You Have A Plan For Your Business?

Get Your ERP. Download the app today!

Amherst, NY has many options for consumers seeking quality products at a reasonable price. National and local chains compete, and the customer wins. The large warehouse-type stores are just as vulnerable as a smaller store boutique when suffering water damage and flooding if plumbing fails or torrential rains overwhelm a flat roof’s drainage system. We have the crews and equipment to respond to a significant water loss. When water pours through your store, you need fast, and the water removal technicians of SERVPRO of Amherst/Clarence are the ones that can do it. Even with much of the merchandise up off the floor on steel shelving or pallets, the water must be evacuated for the safety of your staff and your customers. With floors that extend hundreds of thousands of square feet, the removal task is best left to professionals.

SERVPRO is a local business with a national network to fall back upon if the scale of a job requires supplemental equipment and technicians. Sizeable commercial water losses need just as swift a resolution as those affecting a smaller shop or office. Water that lingers in the property for more than 24 or 48 hours exposes your business to the risk of microbial infestation that might even damage your inventory.

Our commercial loss team works with you to devise a plan where at least a portion of your business remains open during the restoration.

The water removal begins with pumps, moving vast amounts of water quickly out of all areas of your store. As the water level dips below 2 inches, technicians switch out pumps for extractors. Your flooring choice of poured concrete seems impervious to water, but it is a porous material that benefits from rapid water extraction. The floor edges get targeted attention to prevent water from wicking up the drywall or settling in the cells of cinder block construction.

This water emergency might lead to your development of an Emergency Ready Plan and Profile (ERP) through SERVPRO in anticipation of future crises. The ERP allows us to collaborate in devising a concise plan to help both our crews and you and your staff to plan for another loss.

SERVPRO of Amherst/Clarence is ready for your water removal challenge, regardless of the extent of the damage. WE ARE HERE FOR YOU 24 HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. CALL 639-8687

After Fire Care

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

A terrible fire in East Amherst

After a fire damage incident, it is understandable for any homeowner to be stressed. Such traumatic events disrupt your professional or personal lives, and there is need to work closely with a restoration service provider as you work towards returning your East Amherst property to its earlier state. It all starts by identifying what is restorable and performing emergency services to limit further damage.

Cleaning is one of the services that our SERVPRO team offers when attending to fire damaged property. One of our goals is to reduce the fire damage claims. Remember, if you do not act quickly, you might end up with expensive options such as replacing restorable items and resurfacing parts of your structure. We are going to look at some of the principles of cleaning that we use when restoring your materials.

Starting from the location where the fire originated from, our SERVPRO technicians carefully inspect the site. During the inspection, we identify the various kinds of residues, and this helps us to come up with an effective cleaning method. The cleaning process we choose should remove the smoke residues efficiently and not cause any damage to the surface.

There are four essential elements we take into consideration to suspend and remove the smokeresidues: : temperature, agitation, time and chemical action. Our SERVPRO technicians understand that chemical reactions increase as the temperature increases and thus we are keen to select an appropriate degree of heat that corresponds well with our cleaning solution of choice. If we want to dislodge smoke particles and distribute cleaning product on areas, we can use agitation. In this process, we can use sonic vibrations, water and air pressure, brushes and towels. Digesting, changing pH, oxidizing, dissolving, bleaching and emulsifying are some of the chemical actions we take into consideration when cleaning your property. Depending on the action we desire, we select a proper cleaning product. Time is also critical during restoration, and it is dependent on the type of cleaning solutions we use and residues at the site.

Leaky Pipes Can Cause Mold

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Mold resulting from a leaky pipe

One of the first signs that you may have mold damage in your home is continually detecting a musty odor. Catching the odor anywhere in your home is never a good thing, but it is particularly unfortunate when you come across it in your bathroom. It usually indicates that there is a leak in your plumbing and it has caused a mold colony to grow. It is vital to deal with the mold in your bathroom as quickly as possible because it can cause health effects. Fortunately, there is qualified help close to your home that you can rely on. Many people misunderstand the nature of mold spores and how they come to cause mold damage in your home. The truth is that mold spores are not entirely dangerous, and they are everywhere. You can never truly be completely rid of them. However, if they come in contact with moisture, they can rapidly grow and multiply. As they grow, they end up creating a mold colony that can damage the structure of your home.

SERVPRO understands that the longer that mold is in your home, the more damage it can do to the structure of it. We strive to arrive at your residence after your phone call as quickly as possible.

Once our technicians get there, we can begin the remediation right away. The first thing that SERVPRO can do is section off the entrance to your bathroom and any vents inside of it. Creating a quarantine allows us to agitate the mold without giving it the freedom to spread to other parts of your home. As we investigate and find that the mold is building behind your sink, we can begin to disinfect the area and clean the mold from the surface of your walls. While we work, our SERVPRO techs can set up an air scrubber that will remove odors and impurities from the air. Not only does it neutralize the smell that mold creates, but it can also capture airborne mold spores. Once the mold has been cleaned away from your walls, we can use an antifungal spray to ensure regrowth is less likely. Finally, our technicians can make sure to remove any excess moisture from the area. WE ARE HERE FOR YOU 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A

Residual Dampness After a Storm Poses Mold Risk

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Mold forming on dry wall

Harsh winters can take their toll on the structural integrity of homes and businesses. Most often, home and business owners do not even realize the full extent of damage that their home suffered throughout the hardest of winter months until the temperatures return to favorable conditions and snowfall gets replaced with steadier rains. Even worse, the unfortunate way that most people learn about these vulnerable water penetration points in their roof or siding is when water can pour into their houses unabated. Unfortunately, by the time that you begin to recognize that something is amiss, flood waters have damaged your property. With the far reaches of water damage, this is not something that even a skilled homeowner can adequately handle on their own. There are risks associated with failing to remove all the moisture and dampness common to flood damages, and the only way to ensure you do is to hire professional restorers.

Our SERVPRO professionals can respond quickly to your call and work to start removing the present water in your home right away. From portable pumps and wet-vacs with extraction wands to gigantic pumps from our fleet, we have multiple options when it comes to removing the water quickly. While extraction is a critical component of this restoration process, drying efforts hold an equally valuable place in the procedure.

When it comes to ensuring that the affected areas of your home get thoroughly dried, several pieces of equipment often get used. This process is so essential because lingering moisture and dampness are natural breeding grounds for mold and microbial growth. Through devices like our SERVPRO

injectory system, cavities and hard to reach areas get the air they need to dry entirely.

As challenging as flooding in your home might be, especially when it comes from the attic space, there is nothing that SERVPRO water restoration professionals cannot help you to overcome. We can respond quickly with the tools and personnel to get the job done right.

New York has had its fair share of damaging storms, and Amherst is no exception

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage

New York has had its fair share of damaging storms, and Amherst is no exception. Knowing what type of storm is coming is the best way to be prepared. Did you know there are 10 different storm types? This far north, most people think about winter storms when they think about storms. But in the summer months, it’s important to be prepared for effects of tropical storms, too.

SERVPRO® of Amherst Clarence recognizes the importance of keeping homes or businesses safe before and after a storm.

10 common storms are:
  • Hurricanes
  • Tornadoes
  • Flooding
  • Snow storm
  • Hail storm
  • Thunderstorm
  • Lightning storm
  • Tropical storms
  • Ice storms
  • Derecho storms

Not every geographic location in the United States will experience the same type of storms. You might not even know what that last one is (a Derecho storm is one giant storm made of several large storms). More commonly, Buffalo is likely to experience the effects of a tropical storm, even hundreds of miles from the Atlantic Coast.

Storm damage from hail or lightning are familiar, but not everyone is informed about the specific damage a hurricane can cause.

Because hurricanes have far reaching effects (Hurricane Sandy affected 24 states), it’s very important to be informed on the damage they cause. This blog in particular will focus on hurricane - whether you experience a hurricane’s immediate damage or the aftermath.

Common Storm Damage from Hurricanes1. Storm Surge

Storm surge directly affects the coast but can cause widespread damage. Storm surge occurs when wind drives water to the shore to the point that water piles up past the predicted tide level. The power of this water is so forceful that it can destroy structures and buildings.

2. Flooding

Floods from a hurricane are often caused directly by storm surge. The extra water from storm surge is pushed far inland since it has nowhere else to go. The heavy rainfall that accompanies a hurricane also contributes heavily to flooding. Hurricanes can cause rainfall as far as 100 miles from its landing point, causing widespread flooding. A tropical storm doesn’t even have to reach hurricane classification to cause heavy rain and floods.

3. Wind

Wind from hurricanes can reach speeds as fast as 74 - 155 miles per hour. These powerful winds can uproot trees, down power lines, and fling debris. This debris can cause even more damage as it flies around. Winds during a storm can also be so powerful as to lift the roof on a house. Tornadoes can even form within hurricanes.

Damage caused by these hurricane effects can be far-reaching and unexpected. Thus, it is vital to take cautions like stocking an emergency preparedness kit, adding storm-resistant features to your home, and heeding any official warnings ahead of a storm.

Cleanup and restoration after a storm can be overwhelming. Call SERVPRO® of Amherst Clarence, the leading expert in storm damage restoration.

Is your Commercial property and home prepared for flooding?

9/6/2018 (Permalink)

Is your Commercial property and home prepared for flooding?

The likelihood of flooding, even if you live in an area where excess water is unusual, has increased thanks to climate change. If there is a chance for rain, floods are possible.

A flood is defined as when two or more acres or properties are completely or partially submerged by water.

But if flooding happens, the legal definition might be the least of your worries. Instead, you will be worried about cleanup and restoration. Continue reading this blog for helpful information on how to prepare for a flood: no ark necessary.

###1. Electricity In the case of an emergency, you always need to have a generator on hand. It is impossible to know if power lines will still be working after a flood or if the usual electric resources will be available and working. Plenty of variables will determine the type of generator you need.

Don’t forget that water conducts electricity, and a flood means lots of excess water. When flooding is imminent, appliances should immediately be moved to higher ground.

###2. Risk Become familiar with the risk of flooding in your area, using FEMA or your local government’s website. You will be more prepared if you know when floods are likely and what causes them. For the Amherst area, start here.

It’s also smart to purchase a weather radio and become adept at using it so that you will be forewarned of severe weather events that are on the way.

###3. Emergency Prep Is your emergency kit properly prepped for a flood? Your prep kit should include extra water since flooding can contaminate water sources, important documents sealed in waterproof storage, plus extra food supplies. For more information on how to pack an emergency kit, read this guide.

###4. Evacuation Planning for evacuation includes two steps. Start by researching your local government’s official evacuation plan. Then, create a personal evacuation plan with your family that includes emergency communication modes. Practice the evacuation route until everyone is familiar and comfortable with it.

Once the floor waters recede, you’ll want to have a plan in place for clean up. SERVPRO® of Amherst/Clarence is ready to help and make it like it never even happened.

Mold Remediation and Mold Removal

2/19/2018 (Permalink)

Mold discovered in the attic from a leaky roof.

Mold is found under the fungi classification.  It can be a soft green, pink, black or at times a gray growth which develops on objects or old food left out for a lengthy period in warm, wet air.  It can be found in outdoor and indoor.  It is important for the indoor humidity to be kept below 45%. Floods and high humidity levels often lead to microbial growth and fungus. The most efficient method of controlling microbial growth is by moderation temperature. During a floor mold can start to form in 72 hours in perfect conditions.  When the temperature is lowered, the rate of microbial growth decreases rapidly.  Molds are usually accompanied by a musty odor which can lead to health issues in certain individuals.  These colonies are responsible for the production of irritants and allergens that affect the health of people.

An environmental hygienist can determine what treatment can be used for mold remediation.  They will test all affected areas by taking samples of air and swab surfaces.  They design a specific protocol for SERVPRO to follow. SERVPRO utilizes air scrubbers to perform mold remediation under negative pressure, containment to isolate the affected areas, heap vacuuming and specialize cleaning and sealing.  Once the work is completed the environmental hygienist returns to perform post testing to ensure levels are within normal levels and your home is back to being safe.  Call SERVPRO of AMHERST/CLARENCE for your water damage and mold needs.

Warning Storm Approaching ! SERVPRO is READY

2/19/2018 (Permalink)

Snow today......floods tomorrow. Buffalo weather!

Storms can come upon us without much warning. Yes, we watch the news, but bad weather is still unpredictable, so we need to take steps to keep our homes safe from storm damage.

An inspection of your home’s premises is a really good idea to conduct before inclement weather hits. A leaky roof or windows can cause big problems during extreme conditions such as a snow storm or heavy rains. Do all your exterior doors and windows fit correctly? When’s the last time you took a look at your roof to see how things are looking up there? These are all great questions to ask yourself.

Loose shutters and rain gutters can present a real problem in high winds, as can unstable large trees. It might be a good idea to trim back trees and bushes with large heavy branches that are not in good condition, so that windows and vehicles are not in danger of storm damage in windy conditions.

Take time to inspect areas around your home and street and remove debris or dirt that might obstruct the flow of water from a heavy rain. A clogged drainage ditch can cause a lot of damage by flooding your property during, or even after, a storm.

Your family is very precious to you. In the event of a storm, do you have a system in place that will help you to get information to everyone in case of a weather emergency? Most of us use our cell phones to communicate these days, but in the case of a bad storm, your cell phone service could be at risk. You might consider installing a good old-fashioned landline, just in case. If you or a family member gets stuck at work or out doing errands, families will worry, so it’s vital that lines of communication stay open.

The SERVPRO team of SERVPRO of AMHERST/CLARENCE has your back in the event of storm damage, fire damage, or mold issues. You can give us a call today at 716-639-8687or visit us on our website:
